My name is Hamad Khan.I came to the UK as a child. That was over thirty-five years ago. I have had so many ambitions over the years ranging from forensic scientist, criminologist, psychologist, philosopher, research assistant, social relations officer, international development team worker, journalist and even lawyer just to name a few.
After leaving university in 1998, I quickly drifted into writing as a career, becoming a freelancer for newspapers, magazines and websites.
Not willing to be restricted to one profession, I also forayed into recruitment; first as a resource manager where I manned phones, updated databases and spoke to jobseekers in the IT market. After being promoted to consultant, I held interviews, negotiated contracts with employers and successfully closed cases whenever we found suitable candidates for a role.
In 2002, I entered teaching. At first I was largely involved in mentoring English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), where I used my IT recruitment experience to also teach Job Search and help non native English speakers with writing cover letters, CV and Interview Preparation.
In 2003, I made the first of three trips to Saudi Arabia, where for the next nine years, I trekked around the country teaching subjects like ‘Technical Writing’, ‘English for Medicine’, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), ‘College Orientation’ and the ‘Berlitz’ system. During this time, I was fortunate to have sat on four teaching committees (including ‘Research’ where I was chairperson), worked in three universities, two colleges, two institutes and a school.
It was something about being at school that made me try something different again. In 2014 after returning to the UK with two more years of native experience in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to adults, I ventured into children’s education. I taught GCSE English, Literature and History as an assistant tutor and since then have expanded into Maths as well.
Now I still teach children, but in line with my passion for writing, I am also a copywriter which is a bit like a combination of salesperson and advertiser (as well as a writer obviously), with the benefits of both roles, without the stress and hours you have to put in.
